Biography

I am Mirjam Bakal (born 1995 in Eutin , Germany) an artist and editor based in Berlin, working at the intersection of performance, film, and multimedia installation. My practice explores poetic and fragile spaces—between voice and silence, movement and stillness, visibility and disappearance.

Together with my creative partner Hiromichi Matsudaira, I have developed four experimental short films that combine choreography, sound, and layered narratives. Our first project, Flaneur , was selected for the Short Film Corner 2025  at the Festival de Cannes. Each film emerges from an intuitive, research-based process and reflects our shared interest in rhythm, memory, and sensory experience.

As an editor, I collaborate on artistic and cultural productions with a strong focus on storytelling, structure, and emotional resonance. I bring precision, sensitivity, and a deep commitment to atmosphere and flow to every project I engage with.

I am especially drawn to traditional techniques and philosophies that embrace imperfection and transformation. My current work explores kintsugi—the Japanese art of repairing broken ceramics with gold—not only as a craft but as a metaphorical lens. Influenced by Zen, Wabi-Sabi, and embodied memory, I aim to create spaces that allow for vulnerability, complexity, and quiet presence.
